Memphis Central defeated previously unbeaten Wilson Central in the quarterfinals of the TSSAA Girls State Basketball Championship Thursday with a score of 48-43. The win puts the Lady Warriors in the semifinals game Friday at 11:30 am versus Murfreesboro Riverdale.
After struggling offensively in the first half, the Lady Warriors of Central rallied back in the second half led by Jasmine Carson’s 17 points. Miyah Barnes finished with 8, Brianna Cooks had 5, Tijuana Griggs and Johne’ Stewart each added 6, while Kynadi Kuykendoll and Jireh Washington chipped in with 3 a piece. Central coach, Rashad Haynes was quoted “…We have two more games to close out…and win a state championship. Good luck to Coach Haynes and all of the Lady Warriors!! Bring the Gold ball back to Memphis!! The AAA Girls State Championship game is scheduled for Saturday, March 12th at 1:00 pm. All TSSAA State Tournament games are held at MTSU-Murphy Center.
The TSSAA Boys Basketball Championship series is next week. We have two SCIAA teams competing in the AAA division. The Cordova Wolves defeated Southwind in the AAA sectional game on March 7th to advance to Murfreesboro. They will face Walker Valley on Wednesday, February 16 at 10:00 am.
The East mustangs led by Mr. Basketball, Alex Lomax defeated Bolton to advance. They will play Hillsboro on Wednesday at 2:45 pm.
We also have two teams battling for the A Boys Basketball State Championship at MTSU next week. BTW will play Nashville Christian on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 pm. Mitchell will face off with Middle Tennessee Christian School on Thursday at 10:00 am. Good luck and safe travel to all of our teams and fans.
